What Your Usages Actually Consume
An hour of GPS navigation consumes around 5 MB, an hour of messaging uses just a few MB, an hour of social media browsing ranges from 100 to 300 MB, and an hour of high-definition video can reach up to 1.5 GB.
It's video, both watching and calling, that really eats up your data allowance. Everything else is relatively light.
Three Profiles, Three Data Plans
Short trip with essential use, maps and messaging: 1 GB is enough for a week. Typical trip with social media and some photos sent: aim for 5 GB over two to three weeks. Telecommuting, sharing connections or daily video calls: go for 10 GB.
If in doubt, opt for the data plan with the best price per GB rather than the cheapest: the difference is often just a few dollars for three times more data.
Reduce Consumption on the Ground
Download your maps offline before you leave, disable automatic video playback in social media apps, and reserve photo backups for hotel Wi-Fi.
On iPhone and Android, track consumption by app through the mobile data settings.
